![]() A Company in the Public Interest About NISC NISC is dedicated to serving the public with top-quality products at reasonable rates. NISC is the consistent choice of thousands of users in a variety of research settings worldwide. Key to our success is an uncompromising zeal for quality throughout all phases of product production. NISC's search-and-retrieval software, ROMWright, brings related information from various sources together in a seamless interface - the results from years of listening carefully to what customers want. With a broad selection of titles, thorough data preparation, and one of the most advanced software technologies in the industry, NISC looks forward to becoming the "household name" for both scholarly and lay users around the world.
By pricing fairly, NISC appeals to the broadening information-services market. Every product is intended for both the educator and the educated consumer. We are pleased to offer ERIC, the world's largest database on education, at an exceptionally low price through an arrangement with the U.S. Department of Education ERIC Facility (email - ericfac@inet.ed.gov). Also, because of its social importance, NISC's Child Abuse and Neglect CD-ROM is available free by written request (email - NCCANCH@calib.com). This product features the same innovative software and enhancements as our commercial titles. Global Perspective NISC is a family business with global perspective. We search worldwide for high-quality data files and solicit your help, regardless of database size, scope, or electronic format. Databases which are already available electronically (CD-ROM or BiblioLine) can often be published on a current NISC title and/or added to the NISC BiblioLine service. If you are aware of a file which may be of value to your profession, and would like it published by NISC, please contact us at: publisher@nisc.com.
Publishing with NISC Database available on another platform? Please read on! While many databases are available from multiple vendors, or are simply loaded onto the Internet, availability is not the same thing as accessibility. Thousands of customers, and many data suppliers, choose NISC because of our ROMWright software and a wide variety of database services. Whether it's CD-ROM or the Internet, ROMWright puts databases in their best light and gets them used! NISC brings diverse data sources together, organizing and attracting new constituencies of users. Providing the know-how and the polish, NISC places fast, powerful access to data within easy reach. We'll provide full service on the information "superhighway." So even if your database is already "out there," take a look at what NISC can do for you. Whether it's preparing and indexing the data the best way possible, designing an unprecedented search tool, or providing advanced new display and output capabilities, ROMWright continues to win over publishers, librarians, and end-users alike. Using a NISC DISC -- A Search Mode to Suit Every User ROMWright is designed for all users, from the curious high school student to the most demanding information specialist. Each NISC DISC has three search modes, NOVICE, ADVANCED, and EXPERT. The NOVICE mode searches all the descriptive textual portions of each record regardless of field assignment (though searches can be restricted by fields such as Author and Publication Year). ADVANCED mode provides the versatility of "fill-in-the-blank" designation for all fields, which can be searched individually or in any combination. The EXPERT set-searching mode is ideal for pursuing a topic in depth. New searches can be built upon others, previous sets can be easily edited, and sets combined to yield precise results from a broad strategy. EXPERT mode adds new flexibility to the methods used by online searchers. Information professionals, online searchers, and other skilled users have given NISC high marks for EXPERT mode's innovative design and power. All three search modes feature an important, interactive search aide, the AUTODEX (AUTOmatic inDEX). This optional pop-up index window lists possible search words or phrases, displayed in either alphabetical or permuted order as you type. Typing the first three letters of a word pops-up the index at the nearest match. Terms can be selected directly from the AUTODEX -- an easy way to construct searches without typing or spelling errors. Or, you can select any variant of the term. Also, for files which were indexed using a hierarchical thesaurus, NISC's automated thesaurus is state-of-the-art. Advanced navigation and browsing features make it easy to find terms or view scope notes at any level. Never has thesaurus-based searching been this simple. NISC databases can be searched effectively with little or no training. Each title has context- sensitive help, which covers unique database fields along with standard ROMWright commands and features. There is a special configuration program to provide extra software control in a multiuser environment, such as a library. This program lets the administrator customize the software as desired, restrict end-user control of software options, and optimize use on a network (LAN). For example, a specialized research library might use the NWCONFIG program to make available only the ADVANCED and EXPERT search modes, while a public library might choose just NOVICE to suit its walk-in patrons. You can "custom fit" the software to suit your tastes, your end-users, and your hardware.
A simple, user-friendly interface and unequalled search power is only half the story. Retrieved records can be displayed, sorted, and output in ways to suit any research purpose. NISC DISCs make it easy to print a citation for the reference desk, or compile an entire bibliography. Output is to any printer, or file on disk. A variety of export formats make it simple to use the data in popular software applications, such as word processors, databases, desktop publishing programs, and bibliography managers. If necessary, however, NISC users have options to restrict print or electronic file output. So, be in touch. It's time you learned more about NISC. We would be pleased for you to review a free trial of any of our products. |
