Product Overview

The Historical Research Index (HRI) is an index to primary and secondary source reference books on American and world history which provides in depth coverage of political, military and diplomatic history from the U.S., Europe, Asia, the Far East, Southern Africa, and Central & South America. Every effort is made to include important areas often neglected in other electronic history databases such as social, economic, legal, religious, and science & technology history. HRI has extensive coverage of the era between the Spanish American War and the end of  WW II especially with regard to the the Far East (Southeast Asia, China, Japan, Australia and Oceania). Focused coverage is also available for various States of the United States with additional resources in progress. Mexico and the Caribbean are given special attention.

Search this unrivalled database for in depth information about people, significant places and important events that have shaped the course of history.

Database Content

What is different about HRI?

HRI is not a bundle of electronic books. HRI is a sophisticated research tool functioning in a true database format. Nearly 706,525 individually indexed entries -- standardized subject headings assigned by our staff -- provide page-level access to more than 500 carefully selected books with a focus on university reading lists assigned for classroom instruction. Do you need to search for a topic but limit the results to the name of a person, an event, geographic place name, naval vessel or military exercise during a specified range of years -- and not get all of the above? Retrieve precise results with HRI.

Links to electronic resources.

HRI includes the capability to link to books in either electronic or paper formats through your library's OpenURL service. HRI includes the electronic full-text of some books but electronic full-text availability is not a requirement for inclusion in HRI.

A unique and invaluable reference tool for research scholars, students and teachers of history, the Historical Research Index covers World History from the fifteenth century. The otherwise monumental task of going through the index of dozens of books is simplified. The key advantage of Historical Research Index is the ease with which you can pinpoint all the page numbers of different books relevant to your topic. All you have to do is take a print of the results and find the exact pages in the books. Links from the book title take you to the complete book information including the table of contents.
