Product Overview

Marine, Oceanographic & Freshwater Resources (MOFR) is an exclusive combination of the world's premier bibliographic databases on marine, oceanographic, and related freshwater resources. Providing comprehensive coverage of over 1,322,977 records on international marine and oceanic information, as well as substantial coverage of estuarine, brackishwater, and freshwater environments, MOFR is the world's major oceanic resource, indispensable for any professional in the marine sciences.

ASFA Thesaurus: MOFR is the only major ocean collection to provide automated searching with the Aquatic Sciences & Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA) thesaurus (10,000 terms). Other resources provided uniquely on this NISC DISC include the ASFA Monitoring List -- publications indexed in ASFA -- and the ASFA Geographic Authority List. These three tools alone distinguish MOFR as the ocean resource with unprecedented practical value
Database Content

Aquatic Sciences & Fisheries Abstracts: Parts 2 & 3
ASFA, from ProQuest, is sponsored by four U.N. agencies and produced in partnership with research centers worldwide.

ASFA Part 2 : OCEAN TECHNOLOGY, POLICY & NON-LIVING RESOURCES
(1978-present) Covers physical and chemical oceanography and limnology, marine geophysics, geochemistry and geology, marine technology, ocean policy, and nonliving Resources. From 1990, aquatic pollution and environmental quality are covered in ASFA Part 3 only. More than 275,945 records.

ASFA Part 3 : AQUATIC POLLUTION & ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY

(1978-present) Covers all aspects related to pollution and quality of aquatic environments: pollution monitoring, characteristics and fate, effects on organisms and environmental impact, prevention and control, man-made and natural environmental changes, conservation, wildlife management, recreation, and public health. More than 113,430 records.

Oceanic Abstracts
(1964-present) Focuses on marine biology and physical oceanography, fisheries, aquaculture, non-living resources, meteorology and geology, plus environmental, technological and legislative topics. Includes over 226,260 records.

Institute of Oceanographic Sciences Deacon Laboratory/Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory (1985-1996). 145,570+ records. IOSDL houses the U.K. National Oceanographic Library with a database of multidisciplinary coverage including marine physics, chemistry, biology, technology, geology and geophysics, pollution, meteorology, remote sensing, etc. POL specializes in tide and sea level research.

**Note: Beginning in 1997, the Southampton Oceanography Centre (formerly IOSDL) and the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory compile their own databases, OCEANIS and BIDLIB respectively. Please see below for details.

OCEANIS
OCEAN Information System) Southampton Oceanography Centre (1985-present). OCEANIS covers all aspects of marine science disciplines in books, book chapters, journal articles, conference papers, charts, pamphlets, reports, videos, web pages, slide images, etc., all indexed in OCEANIS using the ASFIS Thesaurus. 14,000 new citations are added each year including pre 1985 references. Includes over 75,500 records.

BIDLIB Database
(1997-present). The BIDLIB Database is produced by the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory and specializes in the physical oceanography of coasts, estuaries, and shelf/slope regions, tides, tidal instrumentation, sea level, numeric modeling, oil spill modeling, remote sensing, sediments and gravity. Books, journals, conference proceedings, conference papers, reports, maps, and charts are indexed. 3,000 new citations are added each year. POL is now part of the Centre for Coastal Marine Sciences (CCMS) with Dunstaffnage Marine Laboratory and Plymouth Marine Laboratory. Includes over 22,350 records.

National Marine Biological Library
(1979-present). Over 100 years old, NMBL is one of the largest marine libraries in the world. The NMBL Database of over 92,430 records covers worldwide marine and estuarine pollution, including detection and analysis, levels, biological effects, and control. NMBL database also includes literature on estuaries, coastal waters, and major sea areas of the British Isles and Republic of Ireland. Journals, books, reports, and grey literature are indexed in the database. Approximately 3,400 new citations are added each year.

GeoArchive subset
(1970 and earlier-present) -- Geosystems. Over 242, 675 records providing extensive coverage of all fields of oceanography and hydrology including marine geology, physical and chemical oceanology, ocean and coastal engineering, resource management, meteorology, ocean floor, continental shelf, tidal and wave energy, modeling, instrumentation, marine pollution and waste disposal, marine mining, offshore exploration, policy, legislation, hydrogeology, oceans, chemistry.

National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration
(1807-present) -- NOAA Library & Information Network. 148,380 records. This 23-institution consortium provides nine collections (five including older coverage): hydrographic surveying; oceanography, meteorology, and hydrology; living marine resources; and meteorological satellite applications. Citations are drawn from over 9,000 serial titles, 1,500 active journal subscriptions, 35,000 reports, and meteorological data publications from roughly 100 countries, as well as 1,000 rare books.

Sea Grant Abstracts
(1968-present) -- U.S. National Sea Grant Depository, University of Rhode Island.
The National Sea Grant College Program database includes research on pure and applied science, engineering, business management, law and policy, shipping, fisheries, economics, recreation, and education concerning use and conservation of U.S. ocean, coastal, and Great Lakes resources.  More than 41,895 abstracts.

Long Island Sound Database
(1965-1994) -- Long Island Sound Research Center

Gulf of California: Bibliography of Marine Sciences
(1970-90) -- Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Chesapeake Bay Bibliography
(1970-89) -- Virginia Institute of Marine Science, College of William and Mary.

Biscayne Bay Bibliography
(1960-1994) -- RSMAS Library, University of Miami.

Source materials include scientific journals and periodicals, monographs, proceedings of conferences and symposia, government reports, books, theses and dissertations, and other relevant documents. Many are rare, unpublished, or not indexed by other databases.

Composite records
Duplication among files is resolved by special, software-created composite records that contain the information shared by two or more source records, plus any data that is unique to a record. Composite records provide all the relevant information, but without the inconvenience of duplicate citations. To search just these records, select "COMPOSITE RECORD" from the AUTODEX for the "Database" field.
