Abstract

In South Africa there is no well developed nomenclature available for describing the various aspects of burning that are pertinent to the field of fire ecology. A set of terms and definitions, based on a review of the world literature and adapted where necessary, has been proposed in an effort to overcome this problem. The terms have been grouped into those that describe general aspects of fire ecology and those that relate to fire behaviour and related parameters.
